Ruud Brinks (Enschede, 1978) is begonnen als tekenaar. Daarna maakte hij de overstap naar verf, en wel vooral olieverf. Zijn olieverfwerken zijn vrij realistische, pasteuze landschappen, stillevens, steden en dieren. Om de verf dikker te maken, werkt hij laag over laag, waardoor het reliëf op het werk groter wordt. De werken worden hier heel tactiel van, ze vragen om aangeraakt te worden. De werken lijken voort te komen uit de traditie van de impressionisten, maar dan toch in de 21e eeuw. De voorstelling is namelijk op een afstand duidelijk herkenbaar maar van dichtbij minder duidelijk. De sfeer van het afgebeelde landschap is belangrijker dan de precieze weergave ervan. Na verloop van tijd is hij de landschappen gaan abstraheren. De doeken worden groter en de voorstellingen van de landschappen blijven herkenbaar maar meer gevoelsmatig. Zelf zegt hij hierover: Wanneer ik de landschappen weergeef zoals ze letterlijk zijn, ontneem ik mezelf de vrijheid om te groeien.Het werk dat gemaakt is na een reis naar Berlijn staat in zijn oeuvre duidelijk apart. De intense indrukken die hij had opgedaan tijdens die reis, vertalen zich bij thuiskomst in werk dat zich onderscheidt van zijn overige werk. Hij werkt met acrylverf in mixed-media. Jute, touw en spijkers worden verwerkt op zijn doeken en panelen. De kleuren die hij gebruikt zijn subtieler en minder uitgesproken. Na deze periode gaat Ruud Brinks weer terug naar de olieverf. Zijn landschappen krijgen meer kleur en de doeken worden groter maar ze blijven abstract. De kleuren die hij nu gebruikt zijn meer uitgesproken dan in zijn Berlijnse periode. De primaire kleuren werken als een terugkomend thema, waardoor de herkenbaarheid en de samenhang van de werken groot is. Nadat Ruud Brinks verhuist naar een groter atelier worden de doeken ook echt groot. Voor het eerst werkt hij op doeken van 2 bij 2 meter. Grote doeken vragen om meer ruimte om ook vanaf een grotere afstand te bekijken. Het is duidelijk te zien aan de grootte van het werk dat hij nu ook echt die ruimte in zijn atelier heeft.Hoe de werken opgebouwd worden is prachtig te zien in de serie fotos van het werk Het avondrood kleurt de hemel. In deze work-in-progress serie zijn de verschillende stadia van het ontstaan van het werk vastgelegd. Na het zien van deze serie fotos begrijp je de werkwijze van deze kunstenaar ook beter. Ruud Brinks verwoordt dit zelf door te zeggen dat het maken van een schilderij een continue proces is waarbij de balans tussen doek en geest nooit af is. Vaak laat hij werk even staan en brengt dan op een later tijdstip nog een nieuwe laag aan. In sommige gevallen wordt het helemaal overschilderd. Zijn grootste criticus is hij dus zelf. Dat blijkt duidelijk uit het feit dat tijdens de verhuizing naar zijn nieuwe atelier hij een aantal werken vernietigd heeft omdat hij ze niet goed genoeg vond. Toch kan hij wel zeggen dat een werk op een gegeven moment definitief is. Het scheppend proces mag dan veel fases kennen, maar er is een einde aan, want Brinks weet wel duidelijk wanneer hij zijn bedoeling in het werk heeft getroffen.Zijn techniek is trefzeker. De streken van paletmes en penseel zijn duidelijk zichtbaar en ze zijn allemaal raak. Dit zorgt voor een waarneembaar ritme in het geheel. Hierdoor krijgt het werk een enorme kracht die maakt dat je de elementen in de landschappen als het ware voelt. Je ervaart zo de zwoele wind die in het landschap waait. De verf is dik opgebracht met olieverf, waardoor de gelaagdheid goed waarneembaar is. De verschillende kleuren die over en naast elkaar aangebracht zijn, geven een diepte. Dit alles zorgt voor een intensiteit die verstilt. Omgeven door het werk voel je hoe de landschappen op je inwerken. De voorstelling is geheel uit de afbeelding verdwenen maar de essentie spreekt des te duidelijker. The works seem to spring from the tradition of the Impressionists, but then in the 21st century. The show is in fact clearly recognizable at a distance but up close is less clear. The atmosphere of the landscape depicted is more important than the precise playback. Over time, he is going to abstract his landscapes. even more. In his own words: When I display the landscapes as they are literally, i will not have the freedom to grow. The work made after a trip to Berlin is evident in his work. The intense impressions he had gained during that trip were translated into work that is distinct from his other work. He works with acrylic paint in mixed media. Jute, rope and nails are processed on his canvases and panels. The colors he uses are more subtle and less pronounced.After this period, he went back to the oilpaint. His landscapes contains more colors and the canvas is even bigger but they remain abstract. The colors he uses are more pronounced than in his Berlin period. The primary colors are a recurring theme, so its identity and coherence of the work is great. After he moves to a larger studio, the paintings become really big. For the first time he is working on canvases at 2 meters. These paintings require more space and even a greater distance to view. It is evident from the size of these works that he really has that space in his studio. How the works are constructed we can take a look at the series of photographs of the work "the sunset colors the sky" . This work-in-progress series shows the different stages of development of the work recorded. After seeing this series of pictures you can understand the process of the artist better. Brinks itself expresses this by saying that making a painting is a continuous process where the balance between the fabric and spirit is never finished. Often he leaves the paintings for what they are, takes a moment and then in the next stage a new layer is created. In some cases, the canvas is completely repainted. His biggest critic is himself. This is evident from the fact that during the move to his new studio he has destroyed some work because they weren't good enough. However, he can say that a painting is finished at one point. The creative process may have many phases, but there is an end, because Brinks know its intentions clear when the work has finished. His technique is accurate. The regions of palette knife and brush are clearly visible and they are all precize. This creates a discernible rhythm to it all. This will give the work a tremendous force that makes you feel the elements in the landscape as iif you were standing in the middle. You learn the balmy wind that blows in the landscape. The paint applied is thick oil paint, causing the layers are being properly observed. The different colors on and next to each other,is showing a depth. All this creates an intensity that raises fresh. Surrounded by the work you can feel the landscapes soak on you. The show is completely gone from the picture but the essence speaks more clearly. Van 26 oktober 2011 tot en met 30 oktober 2011 is mijn werk ook te zien bij de Affordable Art Fair in Amsterdam. Lokatie: Westergasfabriek. Vlak voor een tentoonstelling ben ik altijd nerveus en mijn lichaam kent dan geen rust. Ik ben alleen maar bezig met kunst...Schilderijen waar ik maanden mee bezig ben geweest zijn niet goed genoeg, het kan beter, het kan altijd beter! Waarom zag ik dat een maand geleden niet toen ik in mijn atelier staarde naar het werk wat ik had gemaakt. Het was goed, leek af te zijn, integendeel, zeg ik nu. Als ik mijn ogen sluit zie ik verf, kwasten, ruik de geur van mijn atelier en kan niet in slaap vallen. Het is helemaal niet af en ploeter maar weer door. Breng wederom een nieuwe laag verf aan. Zal ik nu tevreden zijn met het resultaat? Is het nu af? Heb ik mijn doel bereikt? Wanneer is het wel af? Het zijn vragen waar niemand een antwoord op heeft. Alleen ik kan bepalen wanneer het af is. Waarom is het zo moeilijk, had ik niet beter meubelmaker kunnen worden? De strijd met verf, het linnen, de voorstelling, van niks naar iets tastbaars., het gevoel, melancholie! Wie kan het anders doen? Niemand, alleen ik. Alles vordert en de datum van de tentoonstelling komt steeds dichterbij. Het gaat goed, ik raak verzadigd en ga op in de verf. Een overweldigend gevoel, een andere wereld. Naar deze plaats zou iedereen een keer naar toe moeten!23 mei 2011, vandaag een heerlijke dag om te schilderen. Tuindeuren van mijn atelier natuurlijk open om niet alleen de geur van de olieverf mijn neus in te laten schieten, maar ook de geur van de bloesem in de tuin. Ach...wat is het leven heerlijk.22 mei 2011,!!! UITNODIGING !!!! Binnenkort zal ik een opendag houden in mijn nieuwe atelier. Houd daarom deze site goed in de gaten voor de datum!
